Keyword Research overview
What each Keyword Research tab does, from tracking your app's keywords to benchmarking competitors and finding new opportunities.
Updated September 30, 2026
Keyword Research is where you find, track and prioritize the search terms your app should rank for. It works for the country and language selected in the app header, and compares your app with the competitors you've selected.
Open an app from My Apps and click Keyword Research in the app's top navigation.
The tabs
| Tab | Use it to |
|---|---|
| App Keywords | Track keywords, see how many rank in each position band and compare your ranks with competitors. |
| Keyword Family | See how keywords cluster into themes and find related combinations. |
| Keyword Teardown | Benchmark the apps ranking for one keyword – their metadata, authority, installs, revenue and ratings. |
| Keyword Performance | Measure how tracked keywords and your visibility change over time. |
| Worldwide Impact | Compare one keyword's volume, difficulty and rankings country by country. |
| Keyword Opportunity | Find keywords with meaningful demand and manageable competition. |
A typical workflow
- Start tracking. On App Keywords, add the suggested keywords your app already ranks for, or type your own. See Track keywords.
- Find more. Use Keyword Opportunity and Keyword Family to spot promising keywords and themes. Send the good ones to your tracked keywords.
- Size up the competition. Use Keyword Teardown to see who ranks for a keyword and how strong they are, and the Top Apps column or Live Search to see today's results.
- Pick markets. Use Worldwide Impact to see where a keyword has the most demand and the best ranking opportunity.
- Act and measure. Put your best keywords into new metadata with ASO Generation, then follow the results on Keyword Performance.
Things that work the same on every tab
- Filters – click Volume, Difficulty or Relevance to set a min and max (0–100). Click Clear filters to reset.
- Translate – shows a translation under each keyword, handy for markets in other languages.
- Competitors – click app icons above a table to show or hide their rank columns.
- Selection bar – tick keywords to act on them together: delete, favorite, mark as negative, copy, or export to CSV or XLSX (actions vary by tab).
- History – click the icon next to a Volume or Rank value to open its history chart.
- Live Search – click More in the Top Apps column to see the current store results for a keyword. From there you can add or remove apps as competitors.
How much history you can view, and how many keywords you can track, depend on your plan.
Google Play recently changed how keyword search results are returned, so some Google Play rankings may be incomplete while data collection adapts.
